Galaxy s9 and s9Plus

The Galaxy s9 will look a lot like the Galaxy S8

The foreign (non korean) IT media think that the Galaxy S9 will be upgraded with detailed specifications to the design similar to the previous Galaxy S8.

The Galaxy s9

The Galaxy s9 plus

Like the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8, the Galaxy S9 is expected to adopt ‘Infinity display’ which minimizes the bezel (border).

Observers say the bezel will be thinner than its predecessor and the display will be up to 90 percent of the device’s front. In the first half of this year, the Galaxy S8, a strategic smartphone, had an overall display ratio of 84%.

It is expected that the rear dual camera will be supplied with the anti-shake (OIS) function same as installed on the Galaxy Note 8.

The Galaxy s9 series dimensions are expected to be the following:

  • The Galaxy s9 146.5 mm (5.72″ full body) / 143.3 mm (5.6″ rounded corners)
  • The Galaxy s9+ 160.5 mm (6.27″ full body) / 158.5 mm (6.19″ rounded corners)

It is more or less certain that the Galaxy S9 will have a design that is comparable to the Galaxy S8. So: with a 5.8 inch Infinity screen that fills almost the entire front of the phone. The Galaxy S9 Plus probably gets a 6.2 inch screen diagonal.

The first to have the Qualcomm’s latest chip Snapdragon 845?

The Galaxy S9 series most likely be the first to feature the Qualcomm’s latest chip Snapdragon 845 and the EXINOS 9810 chipset, which is based on the second generation 10-nm process. The Snapdragon 845 chipset is said to have improved performance by 25% and power efficiency by 30% over previous versions.

The new processor will bring a lot of new possibilites as well as much more smart and economical use of the battery.

Qualcomm has switched back to a quad-core for the 845 and it is clocked at 1.78GHz.

The chip is said to be built on a 7nm node but will be made by TSMC instead of Samsung. Reason for that is because Samsung is switching to 8nm and not yet ready for 7nm.

With the new Snapdragon 845 chip Galaxy S9 will allow you to shoot more true-to-life video and photos, use a smart artificial intelligence assitant to analyze and upload images quickly and keep them secure on your phone. You will be able to do much more and much faster also with a better battery life.

Snapdragon 845 processor

The biggest change to the kinds of photos and video you’re shooting is this: the Snapdragon 845 is the first chipset to record 4K Ultra HD, up to 64 times more shades for a total of more than 1 billion colors, 97 percent wider color gamut.

The Spectra 280 image signal processor makes it all possible, also helping reduce noise and making smoother photos.

What else you get:

  • 30fps photos with zero shutter lag
  • record high-performance video up to 12MP at 60 fps
  • capture slow-motion video at 720p at 480 fps

Snapdragon 845 supports 3D face mapping similar to Apple’s Face ID scanning in the iPhone X. Qualcomm’s chip is able to capture up to 50,000 dots while Apple’s system uses 30,000 dots of infrared light.

Phones running Snapdragon 845 will have up to 16 times faster WiFi take full advantage of the 5G networks when they become available.

Bluetooth 5 support allows you to directly broadcast from your phone to multiple devices, like speakers and wireless earbuds.

Samsung SM-G9600 and SM-G9650 – Snapdragon 840 and 845 surface in benchmarks

According to the listing in tests, the Samsung Galaxy s9 (SM-G9600) has SDM840 SoC, which could be Snapdragon 840 and the Samsung Galaxy s9Plus (SM-G9650) has SDM845, which could be Snapdragon 845 that are yet to be announced on February 25th.

Samsung SM-G9600

Snapdragon 840

These phones could probably be Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9Plus as quad-core SoCs running at  1.78 GHz per core and the scores are very less compared to Snapdragon 835, so it is believe.

Samsung SM-G9650

Snapdragon 845

What’s believable from these benchmark listings are 4GB of RAM and Android 7.1.2, but these could change to 6GB RAM and Android 8.0 in the final version next year.

Super battery life?

The Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus are likely to be equipped with 3,000 and 3,500mAh batteries, respectively.

Last year’s Galaxy S8 and S8+ phones had 3,000 mAh and 3,500 mAh batteries, respectively. Brazil’s ANATEL, the local telecommunications regulator “leaks” actually do list new details about Samsung’s new phones. The leaks reveal that the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ will come with exactly the same capacities. Here’s how one certification:

Galaxy s9 battery certificate

The documents submitted on December 20th and 21st do not mention any smartphone model numbers associated with the Galaxy S9 series. However, because we’re looking at certification documents for new batteries, it makes sense to assume the batteries will be used in upcoming flagship phones.

Also, the fact that we’re looking at 3,000 mAh and 3,500 mAh capacities can’t be just a coincidence. These are likely the Galaxy S9 and S9+ batteries. After all, the Galaxy S9 phone will be almost identical to its predecessor, so it makes sense to use the same sized batteries.

But as we already know, Snapdragon 845 chip delivers up to 30 % better power efficiency, which could allow the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus go beyond the 20 hours mark.

Meanwhile, there is not much more secret about the Galaxy S9. The device comes in a 5.7 inch version with 4GB of RAM and a single 12 megapixel camera behind and an 8 megapixel autofocusing selfie in the front. The S9 Plus gets a 6.2 inch screen, 6 GB memory and a dual camera on the back and the same selfie in the front. On both devices, the main camera has a variable aperture between f / 1.5 and f / 2.4.

As we can see on the retail box (we could not confirm its authenticity), the phone will have a dual rear camera with optical stabilization and super slow motion capture: Super Speed Dual Pixel 12MP OIS (F1.5/F2.4). The front camera is an 8 megapixel camera with autofocus.

Depending on surrounding lighting conditions, you’ll be able to take snapshots with anywhere between f/1.5 and f/2.4 aperture values.New, improved ISOCELL cameras

3-stack FRS, ISOCELL camera and ‘Super PD’ autofocus

Now, Samsung has updated the page for its ISOCELL camera technology with Dual Pixel and Super Phase Detection autofocusing assistance for new ISOCELL Fast brand sensors. The best sensors are made with three fast-read stacks that will enable 480 frames per second video capture at Full HD resolution. SamMobile posits that Samsung could also enable 960fps capture at 720p.

The latest details come from the details about Samsung’s latest ISOCELL mobile imaging sensor. A number of advantaged can be gained by utilising a 3-stack high sensor. For example sensor data can be exported from the imaging assembly at a much faster rate. That will allow this new ISOCELL arrangement to take super-slow-motion images with a capability of shooting at 480 frames per second in 1080p HD resolution. In theory that also opens up 960 fps at 720p resolution.

Samsung Galaxy S9 series rear cameras

The Samsung Galaxy S9 camera can possibly capture full HD video at 480 frames per second. This is possible through the use of a ‘3-stack FRS’: a 3-layer fast readout sensor.

This ‘3-stack FRS’ enables the recording of 1080p full HD video with 480 fps. This is not as high as Sony’s sensor, but a big step forward compared to the camera of the Galaxy S8. Moreover, the sensor of Sony imposes a resolution of 720p on that framerate, which amounts to a comparable processing speed.

Samsung also explains that the new sensor focuses even faster, by ‘Super PD’ autofocus: super phase detection autofocus. Without sacrificing too many details, Samsung claims that the sensor can accurately estimate the distance to fast moving objects even in low light conditions. The result: an even faster autofocus, and thus the ability to capture high-speed video at 1080p.

First appearance of the Samsung core display technology Y-OCTA

The Galaxy S9 series is the first case where the ‘Y-OCTA’ (Your On-Cell Touch AMOLED), a touch-integrated display technology, will be appeared first. Y-OCTA is Samsung’s proprietary technology that incorporates a touch-sensitive display on a flexible organic light-emitting diode (OLED). Galaxy S9’s 5.77-inch and Galaxy S9 Plus’s 6.22-inch flexible OLED will be manufactured in Y-OCTA.

Samsung Electronics introduced only one model (5.77 inches) for the Galaxy S8 series. Last year’s Galaxy Note 8 used a conventional film-type touch rather than a Y-OCTA. However, the Galaxy S9 series will introduce the Y-OCTA – display design, cost reduction, etc., and it has production capacity. The core of the Y-OCTA is to integrate touch functionality into the display. Panel fabrication and touch functions are handled in one process. Until now, Samsung had to add a film-based touchscreen panel (TSP) to implement touch in flexible OLEDs.

The Y-OCTA display is lighter and thinner, and the cost can be reduced by 30%.

Samsung Display has been expanding its production capacity. According to the industry, the capacity of Samsung Display’s Y-OCTA production was 3-4 million units per month as of last year. However, it has been reported that it can supply Y-OCTA of around 10 million units per month while building the L7-1 Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) production line in Tangjeong, Asan, Chungcheongnam-do. As Samsung Electronics and Samsung Display are unique technologies that differentiate themselves from competitors, we believe that the company will maximize its premium strategy.

New Fingerprint scanner

Fingerprint recognition sensor

In addition, the Galaxy S9 series is said to have introduced fingerprint recognition integrated circuit (IC) of Taiwanese Aegis technology. Fingerprint recognition module will be placed on the back of the smartphone under the camera. Aegis Technology is a fingerprint recognition company headquartered in Taiwan developing hte hardware and software required for smart phone fingerprint recognition such as IC and other algorithms. In the meantime, they have been supplying sensors to Samsung’s mid to low-end smartphones and expanding the territory to include flagship models.

Finger scanner and face recognition

Where is the fingerprint scanner on the Galaxy S9? On the Galaxy S8 the finger sensor had to move to the back of the phone. For many users this is a sub-optimal solution. Meanwhile, it seems that the S9 will not have a fingerprint sensor in the screen itself.

However, the placement has improved. The sensor is no longer next to the camera module, but below it. This makes it easier to find it, and you do not need big hands for comfortable use.

Operating system

The Galaxy S9 will soon be released on the market with Android 8.0 Oreo. It is not yet known what improvements Samsung will make in its own software interface – Samsung Experience 9.0.

With Android 8.0 as the starting point in early 2018, you can assume that the Galaxy S9 will get updates to Android P and Q, respectively in 2019 and 2020. If the South Koreans stick to their current update policy, the device will receive security updates until at least 2021.

Latest Galaxy s9 production news

Samsung Electronics is preparing to produce the next strategic smartphone ‘Galaxy S9’ series. Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 plus parts to be entered into the supply and demand has started. The new smartphone will be mass-produced from January as a finished product. It is expected to follow the steps of release in February and March.

Samsung Galaxy S9 main board prodcution

According to the industry on April 26, Samsung Electronics has begun ordering parts for the Galaxy S9 series. The main board was mass-produced by that start. Samsung has decided to adopt ‘SLP’, the next generation high density multilayer board (HDI) substrate. 60% of total PCB demand will be filled with SLP. Samsung Electro-mechanics, Korea Circuit, Daedeok GDS, and Ibidene took charge of mass production. Isu Exaboard has been named as a supplier, but it will be added in February when the preparations are somewhat late.

SLP, abbreviation of ‘Substrate Like PCB’, combines ‘Modified Semi Additive Process’ (MSAP) method, which was used for semiconductor substrate manufacturing, with HDI. It is important to make the microcircuits, which were difficult to implement with existing methods, as MSAP. The purpose is to support the high performance while making the substrate smaller.

The proportion of high-capacity multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCC) is expected to increase significantly with new components such as SLP and dual cameras. MLCC, which stores electricity between metal plates and supplies it to the circuit, is rapidly growing in demand mainly for mobile. MLCC supply is known to have been taken over by Samsung Electro-Mechanics.

The dual camera was decided to be equipped with the Galaxy S9 Plus model. This is the first time Samsung has put a dual camera on its Galaxy S series, its flagship smartphone. However, Galaxy S9 models, like the previous one, will keep a single camera. Samsung Electronics and SEMCO plan to start mass production of the dual camera and single camera on the Galaxy S9 in the near future.
